Many assaults including carjacking, armed robberies, home invasions, and hate crime targeted assaults will involve an attacker/attackers approaching you under a false pretext to deceive you and then surprise attacking you.  These situations present a unique challenge as we are often approached by people in our daily lives in contexts which do not represent a combative threat.  You need a strong understanding counter ambush strategies and tactics to go with your combat mindset to deal with these type of attacks.

This seminar will build the standard core skill sets of the Tang Wei Fighting Method but will focus on applying those skills in response to deceptive surprise assaults.  The first half of the seminar will build the generic mindset, strategies and tactics needed for success in dealing with a deceptive assault.  This half of the seminar will focus upon power output, targeting, and adaptable fighting entries.

The second half of the seminar will focus on application.  The generic skills learned in the first half of the seminar will be expanded upon and applied using scenario drills and training exercises allowing the participants to develop their own ability to spontaneously respond to empty handed assaults and concealed weapon assaults.

Armed robberies, many home invasions, carjacking, rapes and several other crimes all depend upon being able to hold the intended victim at gun or knife point.  While the preferred option is to avoid such situations or to counter the assailant before they are able to put you in such a position, what do you do if errors have already been made and you need to fight out of this type of disadvantage?

This workshop will focus on teaching efficient reversals, counters and escapes facing various holds both standing and on the ground where the enemy is holding you at knife or gun point.

Power output is often an insurmountable factor in a fight whether it is for or against you.  In most people’s eyes, power output is determined by size, strength and basic physical prowess.  While athletic attributes can help with power, often athleticism translates much less into effective power output than effective knowledge, skill and specific coordination habits.

One of the signature features of the Tang Wei Fighting Method is our collection of power drills and concepts which allows tremendous increases in power output which can negate large disadvantages in size and strength and enjoy a power output advantage over larger adversaries through superior skill in terms of power generation.

This workshop will cover several physical and mental power concepts from the Tang Wei Fighting Method while focusing on applying them to grappling methods for finishing a fight.  Targeting will be covered for application of low, medium and high levels of force.  Power output and fight finishing is the core skill set which other tactics and strategies are built around, a thorough understanding of it is a must for anyone that studies close quarters fighting.

In the Tang Wei Fighting Method we offer a unique set we call the “Weapons Set”.  It is a set of 15 weapons fighting techniques which are adapted for use with various close quarters weapons including baton, knife, short chord, sword, spear, staff and others.

Weapons fighting techniques require unique coordination for each weapon and in most systems require years of training.  We are able to get you advanced coordination patterns by using the same set and then adapting the movements for various weapons.

While we advocate a free fighting tactic approach to fighting rather than a technique approach, the tactics you use have to come from existing coordination patterns.  Sets (Tao Lu in Chinese) are the fastest route to advanced coordination and offer quick acquisition of skill in wielding a weapon.

This workshop will cover several Single Dagger Fighting Techniques from the weapons set then will show the students how to adapt these patterns for use in spontaneous attack drills.

  • Workshop Details:

When an enemy moves in on you, you are in a free fighting environment.  The enemy moves in full bore and they don’t bother to tell you what they are going to hit you with, nor with what weapons will they attack you with or from what angle. If you make an error, the fight also will not stop or relent, you will have to be able to adapt whatever movement you instinctively use so that it works.

In a free fighting environment traditional technique thinking and approaches to do not work.  The Tang Wei Fighting Method offers a uniquely comprehensive, effective yet simple approach to free fighting which we refer to as Free Fighting Tactics.  These tactics are simple and adaptable, focused upon powerful and reliable fight finishing basics using direct and decisive approaches to get those basics on target at both infighting and outfighting ranges.

Tang Wei Free Fighting Tactics are taught and introduced in our Street Survival Seminar series but in limited number and depth due to time constraints.  This workshop will allow each Tang Wei Practitioner to gain a better understanding and ingrained proficiency at employing free fighting tactics.

The tactics in this seminar will be taught for application in:

  1. Empty Hand (EH) vs Empty Hand
  2. EH vs Knife
  3. EH vs Stick/Club
  4. EH vs Close Quarters Firearm

We look forward to continuing to train with everyone and taking your training to the next level.

Best,

Tang Wei Martial Arts Association

There seems to be a rising amount of violent assaults committed by enraged and psychotic attackers.  These attacks are direct and overt as they erupt immediately into intense levels of violence.  Often these situations escalate from the verbal level to the highly violent physical level.  These scenarios require strong yet versatile tactical skill which allows your responding use of force to adjust from low, to intermediate to high levels.

This seminar will cover the strategy, tactics and mindset needed to quickly end an overt assault from an enraged attacker.  The first half of the seminar will focus upon power output, targeting, adaptable fighting entries and other items to build the generic mindset, strategies and tactics needed for success in facing an overt enraged assault.  The second half of the seminar will focus on application.  The generic skills learned in the first half of the seminar will be expanded upon and applied using scenario drills and training exercises allowing the participants to develop their own ability to respond to empty handed assaults and weapon assaults.  Knife and club defense will be emphasized and usage of common weapons in self-defense will be touched upon as well.

Plan A is to use effective free fighting tactics to disallow an attacker to get ahold of you or to take you to the ground.  However, fighting is a chaotic environment where surprise and error abounds and so it is possible that you find yourself tied up with an attacker in various grappling holds or even on the ground with the attacker.  In such situations you need to be able to immediately go to plan B and quickly fight out of a disadvantage.

This workshop will focus on teaching efficient reversals, counters and escapes of various grappling holds from both standing and ground positions.

Before the physical part of a fight begins, there is the battle of the mind.  The battle of the mind is what sets up who has the advantage as the combative engagement begins.  Being able to set up a situation so that you have as much of an advantage as possible is strategy and while it is less glamourous than physical combative skills, it often is the greater determining factor in whether you survive or not.

This workshop will teach primary scenario threats as well as the primary strategies for engaging in those scenarios. 1-2 Adaptable Free Fighting Tactics will be covered and then the focus will be on showing how those tactics must be set up by engagement strategy to be able to be deployed under realistic and often uncertain conditions that precede a physical assault.  Attacker mentalities and how to use strategy to take advantage of each attacker will be covered.  The SAFDA model will be introduced and will be used to illustrate gaining and keeping the strategic initiative before during and after the fight.
